Their Small Size:
Adult Babydoll Southdown Sheep are 17″ to 24″ at the shoulder, making them much easier to handle than many other farm animals. Their small size is less intimidating for children and allows for great family pets.
Because of their small size, fencing does not need to be tall. Babydolls do not challenge fencing as much as most sheep, so your fencing concern will primarily be protection from predators. Field fencing works great for pastures and hog paneling can be used as temporary fencing.
The recent trend in agriculture toward smaller homestead gives the Babydolls an important place in the new homesteading lifestyle. They are fuel-efficient lawn mowers and will keep enclosed areas looking tidy and clean. The use of goat electric fencing works great to move these sheep around you property. For farmers using multi-species rotational grazing, babydoll sheep are extremely easy to move around into different pastures.
Temperament:
Babydolls are peaceful, curious, intelligent, and sweet. They are gentle, with great personalities. As a prey animal, they are a little apprehensive about new situations and new people, but spending time and hand feeding is a great way to build a relationship with babydoll sheep.
Babydolls are known for their sweet smiling faces which goes with their sweet and gentle personalities, making them so easy to love.
Productivity:
Babydoll sheep are fuel-efficient mowers while producing great organic fertilizer! They are used successfully in orchards, berry farms, and vineyards as they will not harm the fruits, girdle trunks, or shrubs.
Each spring they will gladly give you the "coat off their back", producing one of the finest wools of all the British breeds. It is springy and short, soft and bouncy, and has a strong underlying disposition. The micron count typically runs from 24-29.
